Exceptional Anglo-Indian Carved Hardwood Octagonal Occasional Table, Kashmir, c.1930-1950
Exceptional Anglo-Indian Carved Hardwood Octagonal Occasional Table, Kashmir, c.1930-1950
A beautifully hand-crafted Anglo-Indian octagonal occasional table, showcasing the remarkable artistry and craftsmanship of traditional Kashmiri woodcarving.
The octagonal top is profusely hand carved with flowing foliate decoration surrounding an elegant geometric inlaid medallion, creating a striking focal point. The quality of the carving is exceptional, with crisp detail and impressive depth throughout, demonstrating the skill of the craftsmen who produced it.
The frieze is enriched with finely pierced lattice panels, while each of the eight sides features beautifully executed openwork carvings of wading birds amongst flowering foliage. The decoration continues seamlessly around the entire piece, allowing it to be appreciated from every angle and making it equally suited as a centre table, lamp table or decorative occasional table.
Crafted from solid hardwood, the table has developed a rich, warm patina through decades of careful use. The combination of deep relief carving, intricate fretwork and harmonious proportions exemplifies the finest qualities associated with traditional Anglo-Indian furniture.
The table remains in excellent antique condition. There are two very small losses to the pierced carving on two panels, both extremely minor, age-related and difficult to detect without close inspection. The piece is structurally sound, with a lovely colour and excellent overall presentation.
