Antique South African Black Stinkwood Side / Wine Table, Circa 1900–1925
Antique South African Black Stinkwood Side / Wine Table, Circa 1900–1925
A superb antique South African Black Stinkwood (Ocotea bullata) side or wine table, dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1925.
Beautifully crafted from one of South Africa's most prized indigenous hardwoods, the circular top displays exceptionally well-figured Black Stinkwood with striking bands of rich chocolate and warm golden-brown colouring, enhanced by a deep, mellow patina developed over more than a century.
The top is raised on a finely turned pedestal, standing on an elegant tripod base with graceful cabriole legs terminating in traditional pad feet. The restrained design allows the remarkable natural beauty of the timber to take centre stage, while the quality of the cabinetmaking is evident throughout.
Black Stinkwood has long been regarded as the finest cabinet timber produced in South Africa and was reserved for the country's highest-quality furniture, prized for its dense, close grain, durability and lustrous finish. Fine examples such as this are increasingly sought after by collectors of Cape furniture and those looking for distinctive antique pieces that complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The table is presented in excellent antique condition, with a beautifully aged surface and only minor signs of wear commensurate with age and careful use.
