A fine, attractive and unusually compact solid mahogany campaign-style secretaire chest, dating from the second quarter of the 20th century, circa 1930–1950.

The hinged upper section opens and folds forward to form a practical writing desk. Its fitted interior incorporates two green gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces, a useful storage compartment and two small stationery drawers furnished with charming original bronze knob handles.

Below the secretaire are four graduated full-width drawers (top faux drawer), each fitted with recessed campaign-style handles. The cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet and is enriched with protective corner mounts and straps, giving it the distinctive appearance associated with British campaign furniture.

The chest is particularly well constructed for its compact size. The drawer linings, backs and the base of the secretaire compartment are solid mahogany, displaying attractive natural figuring. Unlike many later campaign-style pieces, the quality extends beyond the visible exterior and into the cabinet’s secondary construction.

The original lock is in working order and is supplied with its key. The hinges, drawers, writing surfaces and folding mechanism all operate correctly.

A handsome and highly practical piece of furniture, ideal as an occasional writing desk, bedroom chest, hallway cabinet or compact home-office workstation.

Condition: Very good usable condition, with minor marks, variations in colour and wear consistent with age.
