Early 20th Century Chinese Elm Chicken Cabinet / Food Cupboard
Early 20th Century Chinese Elm Chicken Cabinet / Food Cupboard
Late Qing – Early Republic, c.1890–1920
A fine and increasingly scarce Chinese provincial elm chicken cabinet dating from the Late Qing to Early Republican period, retaining its original carved decoration, brass hardware and mellow honey-coloured patina.
Constructed in solid elm using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, the cabinet features four beautifully pierced carved panels centred with auspicious Chinese characters representing the Four Seasons, symbolising prosperity, abundance and harmony throughout the year. Beneath are three drawers above an unusual ventilated lattice cupboard with slatted interior shelving, originally designed to store food while allowing air circulation.
The cabinet stands on elegant square legs and retains its original brass handles and escutcheons. The rear is traditionally panelled with wide backboards and strengthening battens, further supporting its authenticity and early date.
Originally intended as a domestic food cupboard, often referred to as a Chicken Cabinet, these cupboards were commonly used in northern China for storing cooked food, poultry and household provisions safely while allowing natural ventilation.
The cabinet displays a rich warm elm colour developed through many decades of use and has acquired an attractive, honest patina impossible to reproduce.
Decorative Features
The carved panels retain traditional Chinese auspicious symbolism, with characters representing the changing seasons, expressing wishes for prosperity, longevity and abundance throughout the year.
