Set of four English Arts & Crafts Gothic Heraldic Lion-Back Windsor Dining Chairs, Circa 1890–1905
Set of four English Arts & Crafts Gothic Heraldic Lion-Back Windsor Dining Chairs, Circa 1890–1905
An exceptional set of four English Arts & Crafts Windsor dining chairs, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period (circa 1890–1905).
Constructed in dark-stained beechwood, each chair features the elegant continuous hoop (bow) back with finely turned legs united by traditional crinoline stretchers. The distinctive carved splats display a heraldic shield enclosing a rampant lion beneath Gothic-inspired pierced and floral carving, a recognised Arts & Crafts design that is seldom encountered, particularly in larger matching sets.
The four chairs retain their original Pioneer Stores Ltd., Liverpool retailer's brass labels, providing an interesting historical connection with one of Liverpool's well-known furniture retailers of the period.
The frames are solid throughout with an attractive warm oak patina acquired over more than a century. The chairs display the honest signs of age expected from antique furniture while remaining both decorative and practical for everyday dining.
The chairs have been professionally reupholstered in high-quality pale tan lamb leather, finished with traditional brass stud detailing.
During the reupholstery process, one seat required a discreet leather join where the available hide was marginally undersized. The join has been professionally bonded and finished to a high standard and is positioned towards the outer edge of the seat, making it unobtrusive in normal use. They have no impact on the chair's structural integrity, comfort, or everyday usability.
There are also some natural variations and light markings within the leather, slightly more noticeable on one seat. These are inherent characteristics of the hide resulting from the tanning process rather than defects.
Please refer to the photographs, which form part of the description. The above has been noted purely in the interests of complete transparency, as neither the leather joins nor the natural markings are obvious or detract from the overall appearance or quality of the chairs.
A great opportunity to acquire a set of four matching Arts & Crafts dining chairs.
