Set of Four British Arts & Crafts Revival Ash & Cherry Stools, from the West Country or Cotswold Region, England, circa 1965–1980

A wonderfully characterful collection of four handmade British country craft stools dating from the Arts & Crafts revival of the 1960s–1970s.

Constructed with beautifully figured solid ash seats over turned solid cherry frames, each stool displays traditional through-tenon construction with exposed wedged tenons that become an attractive decorative feature. The elongated hand slot, sculpted seat profile and restrained ring turning all reflect the influence of the Cotswold Arts & Crafts tradition, where honest construction and native timbers were celebrated above ornament.

Although not an original matching set, the stools are unquestionably from the same workshop or maker, sharing identical construction methods, timber choices, proportions and design language. The slight variations in seat outline and heights are entirely consistent with small-scale workshop production, where each piece was individually finished by hand rather than factory produced.

The ash seats have been carefully selected for their exceptional grain, each displaying unique figuring and colour variation. The rich cherry frames have matured to a beautiful warm patina and retain their original finish.

The visible wear to the seats is entirely honest, reflecting decades of domestic use and adding to their authenticity without detracting from their appearance.

Equally suited as occasional seating, kitchen stools, bedside tables or sculptural decorative objects.

Condition: Presented in very good original condition with an attractive, well-developed patina. Expected light surface wear, small marks and minor abrasions are consistent with age and regular use. Two seats exhibit slightly more pronounced cosmetic wear, clearly shown in the accompanying photographs. These signs of use are entirely commensurate with handmade furniture of this period and serve only to reinforce the authenticity and character of the stools, without compromising their appearance, structural integrity or decorative appeal.
