A superb late 19th century set of four English Arts & Crafts ladderback dining chairs.

Beautifully hand-crafted in solid quarter-sawn oak, each chair displays the honest craftsmanship and restrained elegance synonymous with the English Arts & Crafts movement. The shaped five-slat backs have been individually hand-finished with their subtle variations in profile and contour reflecting traditional workshop methods. There is a lovely deep, mellow patina to the oak that developed naturally over more than a century.

Constructed using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with turned front stretchers and robust tapering legs, the chairs possess the strength and integrity expected of well-made period furniture. The frames remain tight and structurally sound.

The seats have recently been professionally hand-rushed using natural rush in the traditional envelope weave, ensuring complete authenticity of appearance whilst providing many decades of future service. This sympathetic restoration greatly enhances both their practicality and desirability.
