An elegant and unusual English Edwardian Sheraton Revival painted mahogany side chair of exceptional decorative quality, retaining its original polychrome painted ornament and hand-caned seat.

The shield-shaped back is centred by a beautifully painted stylised chrysanthemum or dahlia within an open pierced splat, the design displaying a subtle Art Nouveau influence while remaining firmly rooted in the late eighteenth-century Sheraton tradition. The painted decoration continues throughout the chair, with finely executed floral sprays, green faux fluting to the legs and restrained gilt highlights, creating a cohesive decorative scheme rarely encountered on surviving examples.

Constructed in solid mahogany with excellent cabinetmaking throughout, the chair features square tapering legs, shaped seat rails and traditional corner bracing secured with period slotted screws. Examination of the underside confirms high-quality workshop construction rather than later reproduction methods.

The seat has been professionally re-caned using traditional hand-caning, an expected and sympathetic restoration that ensures both strength and everyday usability.

Comparable eighteenth-century painted Sheraton chairs survive in museum collections, including examples by Seddon & Sons in the Victoria & Albert Museum, although this chair represents an Edwardian revival interpretation with distinctive Art Nouveau floral decoration dating from approximately 1900.

Condition is very good for its age, with minor wear and rubbing consistent with more than a century of use. The painted decoration displays attractive age-related craquelure and patination, adding considerably to its character. Structurally sound and ready for use.

An uncommon decorative chair, equally suitable as a hall chair, bedroom chair, desk chair or occasional accent piece.
