A particularly elegant and finely executed late 19th-century French Louis XVI Revival side chair of petite proportions, displaying exceptional craftsmanship and beautifully preserved decorative detail.

The architectural cresting is surmounted by carved gilt finials above an exquisitely shaped lyre-form back, enriched with finely carved beaded moulding and fluted detailing, all supported by slender fluted uprights. The serpentine seat is upholstered in an elegant floral silk damask and finished with traditional braided trim.

Raised on finely fluted tapering legs headed by carved gilt paterae, the chair retains its original hand-painted and parcel-gilt decoration in soft ivory and pale duck-egg tones with burnished gilt highlights, the surface having developed a wonderfully mellow patina that only decades of gentle use can produce.

Wonderfully refined in both scale and proportion, this is a decorative chair of far superior quality to the majority of Louis XVI Revival examples. The crisp carving, elegant silhouette and restrained palette perfectly embody the sophistication of French decorative arts during the late nineteenth century.
