A superb example of Damascus craftsmanship dating from the late 19th century, this impressive folding Savonarola throne chair is finely constructed in solid walnut and profusely decorated with intricate mother-of-pearl inlay throughout.

The circular cresting and central splat feature an elaborate Moorish geometric medallion framed by finely executed floral and scrolling foliate decoration, repeated across the arms, seat rails, supports and feet. The extensive mother-of-pearl inlay is complemented by delicate silver wire stringing (tested), creating a striking contrast against the rich walnut timber.

The elegant curved arm supports, traditional X-frame Savonarola base and boldly carved silhouette combine to produce a highly decorative and sculptural piece, equally suited as a statement chair or centrepiece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The chair remains in excellent antique condition, with the mother-of-pearl inlay remarkably complete. There is light age-related wear to the original finish together with a handful of minor surface losses and rubbing, all entirely commensurate with its age and careful use. The frame is solid, stable and ready for use.

A particularly fine and unusually decorative example of Syrian furniture, displaying craftsmanship of the highest order.
