Large Signed Mid-20th Century Oil on Board – Rural Haymaking Scene (circa 1965 - 1985)

£345.00

An attractive and well-executed mid to late 20th century oil on board, signed lower right E. J. Hockey, depicting a traditional rural haymaking scene with a pair of harnessed draught horses standing beside a loaded hay wagon, attended by two farm workers within a peaceful English countryside landscape.

Painted with confident brushwork and rich areas of textured impasto, particularly throughout the hay, the work captures the warmth and atmosphere of a late summer harvest. The composition is balanced with mature trees, open pasture and traditional field fencing providing depth and a pleasing sense of tranquillity.

The painting is executed in oils on composition board (hardboard type support) and remains in its original satin birch veneered frame, which is in very good original condition and complements the artwork beautifully.

Although the artist is presently unrecorded, the painting possesses considerable decorative appeal and would suit both traditional and contemporary interiors, particularly farmhouse, country house or cottage settings.

Condition

The painting presents very well, with vibrant original colour and substantial impasto texture throughout. No restoration or overpainting are visible under normal inspection. A beautiful, period satin birch veneered frame is in very good condition with only light age-related wear commensurate with age. There is a minute lose to the veneer at the very top edge of the frame but not immediately visible and will not be visible once hanging in situ.
