James I Period English Vellum Indenture of Bargain & Sale, c.1603
James I Period English Vellum Indenture of Bargain & Sale, c.1603
A superb and highly decorative English vellum Indenture of Bargain and Sale, dating to the reign of King James I, almost certainly circa 1603. This impressive legal manuscript records the conveyance of land and property in the historic County of Monmouthshire, representing an outstanding survival from the early Stuart period.
Written in an elegant Secretary Hand on a large sheet of vellum, the deed opens with a beautifully executed illuminated calligraphic initial and retains its original pendent wax seal suspended from the lower edge on its vellum tag. An attached folded vellum memorandum, believed to date from the mid-18th century, provides an archival summary of the original transaction, illustrating the continued legal importance of the document for well over a century after its creation.
The indenture records Richard Blorythe conveying property to William Edwards, with repeated references to the historic Monmouthshire locations of Penhow, Wentwood, St. Bride's, and almost certainly Portskewett. The deed conveys the customary rights associated with an English freehold estate, including messuages, lands, tenements, woods, commons, waters, ways, hedges, ditches, profits, easements and hereditaments.
In modern terms, the deed records Richard Blorythe selling and permanently transferring his property and all associated rights to William Edwards for an agreed consideration, whilst warranting good title and guaranteeing peaceful possession for Edwards and his heirs.
The vellum displays the attractive undulation and creasing expected of a document over four centuries old, with beautifully preserved dark iron gall ink throughout. The original wax seal survives in good order, and the document has been professionally mounted within a quality modern frame, making it an exceptional decorative and historical display piece suitable for a period interior, library, study or country house.
