Large Antique Spanish Terracotta Four-Handled Storage Vessel, Andalusia, Spain, circa 1880–1920

£640.00

A striking and highly decorative late 19th to early 20th century Spanish hand-thrown terracotta storage vessel of rare flattened globular form, retaining exceptional original surface and traces of its decorative finish.

Constructed in coarse red earthenware, the vessel features four integral lug handles, a substantial rolled rim and an unusual segmented "melon" body formed with carefully hand-applied raised clay straps. The applied decoration retains traces of its original ochre-coloured highlighting, contrasting beautifully against the naturally weathered terracotta surface and creating a rich sculptural appearance.

The interior is fully coated with its original pale honey-coloured lead glaze, still displaying the concentric throwing rings from manufacture. This traditional glazed finish indicates the vessel was originally intended for the storage of liquids or preserved foods such as olive oil, wine, vinegar or olives, while the unglazed exterior has developed an outstanding naturally aged patina through decades of use.

Unlike the more commonly encountered Spanish olive jars, this example possesses an unusually broad, compressed profile that gives it exceptional decorative presence. The combination of the rare form, applied ornament, glazed interior and surviving traces of the original decorative finish makes it a particularly attractive example of Mediterranean country pottery.

Today it offers tremendous decorative appeal, equally suited to a country house, contemporary interior or curated collection of European rustic ceramics.

Condition

Very good antique condition consistent with age and use.

The vessel displays a superb untouched surface with attractive natural weathering and a beautifully developed patina. Historic chip to the rim together with expected surface wear and losses to the original decorative finish. Original glazed interior with no evidence of modern restoration observed.

A highly authentic and honest survivor.
