A fine and highly decorative late nineteenth-century French Louis XVI Revival overmantel mirror of generous proportions, retaining its beautifully aged original character throughout.

Constructed in solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the frame is enriched with finely cast gilt bronze (or gilt brass) decorative mounts, including ribbon-and-laurel swags, floral corner rosettes and pendant husk ornament, all retaining an attractive aged patina with traces of original gilding.

The frame retains a mellow painted finish which is believed to be original or an early period finish, now beautifully softened through natural age and wear. The subtle tones provide an elegant contrast to the warm gilt metal ornament and make the mirror equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.

The original mirror plate displays extensive, even foxing and age-related silvering deterioration across the surface, producing the wonderfully soft reflective quality that only genuine nineteenth-century mirrors acquire over time. The authentic patination gives the piece exceptional decorative presence and is increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike.

The rear has been sympathetically conserved with a professionally fitted protective backing, ensuring the original mirror plate is properly supported while respecting the integrity of the piece.

Condition

Very good antique condition.

Structurally sound with traditional construction throughout. Original mirror plate with extensive age-related foxing, silvering wear and minor surface marks commensurate with age. Original gilt metal mounts displaying attractive natural wear and verdigris. Frame retaining an attractively aged painted finish believed to date from the period of manufacture or very early in its life. Rear professionally and sympathetically conserved with a removable protective backing. There are only a few signs of historical woodworm but they are long gone and has been treated as extra precaution.
