A handsome and authentic late nineteenth-century Spanish Fajalauza tin-glazed earthenware bowl from Granada, hand-thrown and decorated in the traditional cobalt blue, turquoise, green and ochre palette.

The interior is centred by a stylised bird surrounded by scrolling foliage and floral motifs, enclosed within concentric manganese bands and a distinctive blue dash-decorated rim. The exterior is similarly decorated with turquoise glazed ornament to the rim, while the unglazed foot displays the expected wear consistent with genuine nineteenth-century use.

Fajalauza pottery has been produced in Granada since the sixteenth century and is renowned for its bold hand-painted decoration inspired by Islamic and Renaissance ceramic traditions. Large decorative bowls of this size are considerably less common than smaller domestic examples and display exceptionally well.

The brushwork remains lively and confident, retaining excellent colour throughout with an attractive aged surface and honest signs of use accumulated over more than a century.

Several small frits and glaze losses to the rim consistent with age and use.

Expected wear to the foot rim.

Overall an honest, decorative and highly usable antique with excellent display presence.
