A striking large-scale Chinese chess set, dating from the late 20th century (circa 1980s–2000), housed within a black faux-leather-covered wooden cabinet decorated with imperial dragons amongst stylised clouds.

The top incorporates a cream and black leather-effect chessboard framed by gilt chinoiserie ornament. Two opposing fitted drawers contain a complete set of 32 moulded resin chessmen in contrasting ivory and black finishes. The figures are inspired by Chinese imperial and Terracotta Army imagery, with soldiers as pawns, horses as knights and architectural watchtowers as rooks. The king and queen take the form of richly detailed court figures.

The drawers are lined with repeating Chinese longevity emblems and fitted with shaped, flocked storage trays. The cabinet is raised on bracket feet and retains its decorative antiqued metal handles.

A particularly decorative and substantial example, suitable for use as a chess set or as a statement piece for a library, study or games room.

Condition: The chess set is complete with all 32 pieces. It remains structurally sound and presents well overall, but has age-related wear consistent with use.

There are scattered losses, lifting and rubbing to the black faux-leather covering, most noticeably around the projecting edges, corners, drawer fronts and base. The board and cabinet have associated scratches, knocks and surface marks. The metal handles show oxidation and wear. The light-coloured pieces have some surface discolouration and the protective covering over their fitted tray is creased and distorted.
