Large Mid-Century Continental Majolica Jardinière with two Putti, probably Italian
Large Mid-Century Continental Majolica Jardinière with two Putti, probably Italian
A striking mid-century Continental majolica jardinière, probably of Italian manufacture, modelled in the classical taste with four seated putti supporting a richly fluted urn-form bowl above an ornate scrolling base.
The piece is decorated in vibrant mustard yellow, cobalt blue and emerald green majolica glazes with an attractive overall craquelure, lending warmth and character to the sculptural form. The quality of the moulding is particularly good, with crisply modelled figures and elegant scrolling feet creating a strong architectural presence.
The underside is unmarked, retaining remnants of its original paper retailer's label, suggesting manufacture for the European export market during the 1960s.
Equally suited as a jardinière, centrepiece or purely decorative display piece, it would complement traditional, eclectic or maximalist interiors.
Condition
Very good vintage condition overall.
There is attractive age-related glaze crazing throughout together with a couple minor historic chips and glaze losses to the extremities of the scrollwork, consistent with age, handling and use. No evidence of significant restoration was observed. The losses are unobtrusive in display and do not detract from the overall decorative appeal.
