Fine Regency Carved Mahogany Torchère or Plant Stand English, Circa 1820–1840
Fine Regency Carved Mahogany Torchère or Plant Stand English, Circa 1820–1840
A particularly elegant and well-proportioned Regency period carved mahogany torchère or plant stand of excellent colour and quality, dating to the second quarter of the 19th century.
The circular dished top with finely moulded edge is supported by a slender reeded column, leading to an exquisitely carved foliate and acanthus decorated pedestal, enriched by a turned bead collar. The stand is raised on a finely modelled four-legged base with boldly carved cabriole legs terminating in crisply executed ball and claw feet, displaying the confident craftsmanship associated with the better English cabinet-making workshops of the Regency period.
Constructed in richly figured solid mahogany, the stand has acquired a beautiful deep colour and mellow patina through nearly two centuries of careful use. The elegant proportions and restrained decoration make it an exceptionally versatile piece, equally suited as a torchère, plant stand, lamp table or decorative pedestal.
The stand remains in very good antique condition with a pleasing surface throughout. There is an old professional repair to the top, visible on close inspection and shown in the photographs. It is structurally sound, stable and has blended well with age, having little impact on the overall presentation or functionality of the piece.
An attractive and increasingly sought-after Regency stand, offering both decorative appeal and practical use.
