A Rare Late Victorian Copper Eight-Division Umbrella and Stick Stand, circa 1880–1895
A Rare Late Victorian Copper Eight-Division Umbrella and Stick Stand, circa 1880–1895
A particularly handsome and seldom-encountered late 19th-century copper umbrella and walking-stick stand, designed in the restrained geometric manner associated with the English Aesthetic Movement.
The rectangular upper gallery is arranged as a generous eight-division grid, supported by four slender copper uprights and framed by substantial tubular rails. Each corner is surmounted by a boldly modelled spherical finial, giving the stand a strong architectural silhouette.
The uprights terminate in the original heavy cast-iron base, incorporating a removable rectangular drip tray with raised geometric divisions. The base is enriched with a repeating scalloped border, providing a subtle decorative contrast to the clean linear construction above.
The combination of warm, naturally patinated copper and black-painted cast iron is especially attractive. Copper examples of this form are considerably less common than their brass counterparts, while the eight-section arrangement further distinguishes this model.
A highly decorative and practical piece of late Victorian hall furniture, ideally suited to an Aesthetic Movement, Arts and Crafts or country-house interior.
