Victorian Oak Coopered Barrel Stick Stand Circa 1850–1880
Victorian Oak Coopered Barrel Stick Stand Circa 1850–1880
A charming and authentic Victorian coopered oak barrel, later converted into an attractive and practical stick or umbrella stand.
Expertly constructed from solid oak staves and secured with its original hand-forged wrought iron hoops, this handsome country house piece retains its original wooden bung and displays a wonderful depth of colour with a rich, untouched patina developed over well in excess of a century.
Originally produced as a working liquid cask, probably for the storage of spirits or other beverages, the barrel has been sympathetically adapted many years ago into a stick stand, preserving its original character while creating a highly decorative and functional hallway piece.
The oak has mellowed beautifully with age, displaying warm honey and chestnut tones together with honest wear, minor knocks and age-related surface marks that speak to its long working life. The wrought iron hoops retain their original dark oxidised finish, complementing the rustic character of the piece.
A superb example of traditional 19th-century coopering, ideal for a country house, farmhouse, period cottage, shooting lodge or traditional pub interior.
