An elegant and unusually restrained pair of mid-19th century patinated bronze campana urns of classical form, probably French, inspired by ancient Roman prototypes and executed in the refined Neoclassical taste.

Each urn displays a broad moulded everted rim above a waisted neck and finely gadrooned lower body, raised on a circular socle and square plinth. The bodies are cast in one piece, with separately applied moulded rims, and retain their original rich brown-black patination with attractive natural verdigris acquired through age.

The interiors show extensive original lathe finishing, characteristic of high-quality 19th-century bronze manufacture, while the virtually identical weights demonstrate that the urns were conceived and produced as a true matched pair rather than assembled later. Unmarked, as is frequently encountered with better-quality decorative bronzes supplied through Parisian furnishing houses and bronziers during the mid-19th century.

Restrained in design and exceptionally well proportioned, these urns possess a timeless architectural quality that makes them equally suitable for a Georgian, Regency or contemporary interior.
