An exceptionally large and accomplished hand-built studio ceramic sculpture of an eagle owl, probably English and dating from the latter part of the twentieth century.

The bird is shown standing alert upon an integral tree-stump base, its monumental form modelled entirely in the round. Individually applied and deeply incised feathers create a remarkably complex surface, changing in scale and direction across the head, breast, wings and tail. Particular attention has been given to the powerful talons, hooked beak, projecting ear tufts and unusually expressive yellow eyes.

The sculpture is clearly the work of a practised wildlife sculptor rather than a conventional production potter. Its hollow, thick-walled construction, extensive hand modelling and combination of naturalism with expressive exaggeration indicate an ambitious one-off studio work.

Unsigned. The sculpture has notable stylistic and technical affinities with the large ceramic bird sculptures of Colin Kellam (1942–2020), particularly his documented 70cm Vulture: the comparable scale, bird-on-stump composition, layered feather modelling, dark talons and earthy high-fired surface are persuasive. Kellam studied sculpture and ceramics before working with Marianne de Trey and establishing the Lion Brewery Pottery in Totnes in 1968. However, in the absence of a signature, documentary evidence or expert confirmation, the attribution remains provisional.

Acquired with a related ceramic cormorant from a longstanding private home in the Cotswolds, where the work have been owned for many years.

Condition: In great overall condition, retaining a pleasing, intentionally earthy surface. Irregularities, minor fissures, glaze variations and rough areas appear largely consistent with hand construction and firing.
