An expressive bronze-patinated plaster sculpture depicting a reclining male nude, probably French or Continental European and dating from the second quarter of the 20th century.

The figure is shown resting against a roughly modelled rocky support, his elongated body extending dramatically across the integral rectangular base. The sculptor has treated the anatomy with considerable freedom: the strongly defined torso, prominent hands and feet, and vigorous, tactile surface give the work a distinctly interwar modernist character.

Its low horizontal composition and warm bronze-effect finish relate to French sculpture of the Art Deco period, although the energetic modelling is closer to the expressionist studio tradition associated with Rodin, Bourdelle and their wider circle of influence than to commercially produced Art Deco figures.

The exposed underside confirms plaster construction. The irregular surface, individual modelling and substantial integral base suggest that it may have originated as a studio or exhibition plaster rather than as conventional mass-produced decoration. No signature or maker’s mark has been located, and the sculpture is consequently offered as French or Continental School.

An unusual and imposing male nude with considerable decorative presence, well suited to a console table, library or contemporary interior.
