A large and highly decorative antique Burmese standing Buddha, carved in wood and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Originating from Burma, now Myanmar, the figure is conceived in the distinctive Mandalay tradition. The Buddha stands serenely upon a stylised lotus pedestal, with an elegant elongated form, delicately modelled hands, elongated earlobes and a characteristically composed, youthful expression.

The figure retains an attractive combination of rich vermilion-red lacquer, gilded decoration and elaborate raised lacquer ornament. The borders of the robes, forehead band and pedestal are embellished with scrolling motifs and numerous small pieces of coloured and mirrored glass. These traditional decorative techniques give the sculpture a particularly striking appearance under changing light.

The tightly curled hair rises to a pronounced ushnisha, while the finely rendered robe falls in broad, flared folds around the figure. The reverse is more restrained, as is customary with images intended to be viewed principally from the front.

The figure stands 108 cm high and has considerable presence, making it suitable as a focal point in either a traditional or contemporary interior.

The sculpture is constructed in carved wood upon a separately worked lotus and black wooden pedestal. Examination of the underside reveals traditional hand-tool marks, an old hollowed cavity and long-established construction, supporting its attribution as a genuine antique devotional or temple image rather than a recent decorative reproduction.

Origin: Burma/Myanmar, probably the Mandalay region.

Materials: Carved wood, lacquer, gilding and coloured mirror-glass inlay.

Condition: In very good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with age. There are natural drying cracks and open joins, rubbing and local losses to the gilding and red lacquer, and a few of missing or damaged mirror-glass inlays once again consistent with age. The principal carving, hands and lotus pedestal remain substantially intact. The surface has not been over-cleaned and retains considerable character.
