Impressive early 20th century, "Republican period, Foo dog
An impressive early 20th century, "Republican period, circa 1920–1935" Chinese Export polychrome glazed ceramic Guardian Lion (Foo Dog), modelled seated in the traditional manner upon an elaborate architectural plinth.
The female lion is shown with her left paw resting protectively upon her playful cub, symbolising nurture, prosperity and the safeguarding of the family, whilst wearing an ornate ceremonial collar with pendant bell. Beautifully decorated in richly coloured emerald green, golden ochre and burnt umber glazes, the figure displays exceptional presence and decorative impact.
At an impressive 88 cm in height, this monumental example would have originally served as an architectural or entrance guardian and today makes a striking statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
