Fine Signed French Colonial Art Deco Hardwood Bas-Relief
Fine Signed French Colonial Art Deco Hardwood Bas-Relief
Possibly Madagascar, circa 1935–1950
A striking and exceptionally well-executed carved hardwood bas-relief depicting a stylised village hunting and domestic scene, executed in the distinctive sculptural language of the French Art Deco period.
Carved from a substantial single section of dense tropical hardwood, the panel portrays four figures engaged in a communal activity centred around the preparation of game, the principal figure holding what appears to be a bird while another carries a ceremonial hunting club or staff. The sculptor has employed the bold simplified forms, rhythmic composition and rounded modelling synonymous with the finest decorative carving of the late Art Deco era, while retaining a remarkable sense of movement and narrative.
The reverse is boldly incised with the sculptor's original signature. Although the artist has yet to be conclusively identified, ongoing research suggests the inscription may read "Jacques "Jacques Randrianasolo?", possibly indicating a Malagasy surname. If correct, this would place the work within the rich artistic tradition of French colonial Madagascar during the final decades of French rule, where indigenous craftsmen increasingly combined local carving traditions with European Art Deco aesthetics. This attribution remains a well-founded possibility rather than a confirmed fact and the panel is offered on the strength of its artistic merit and authenticity.
Unlike the commercial tourist carvings that became widespread during the post-war period, this is a confidently composed and professionally executed sculpture. The modelling of the figures, controlled relief, sophisticated composition and original carved signature all suggest the work of a trained sculptor producing decorative art rather than souvenir craft.
The surface has developed an attractive deep patina through age and use, enhancing the sculptural quality of the carving while retaining excellent definition throughout.
A highly decorative and increasingly collectable example of colonial-era Art Deco sculpture that comfortably bridges the worlds of European modernism and African artistic tradition.
