Signed & Dated 'LMD 87' – British, Probably Gloucestershire, 1987

A finely hand-carved relief wall plaque depicting a distinguished Georgian gentleman wearing a tricorn hat and full powdered wig, executed in high relief from a single substantial plank of what is believed to be British sycamore.

The plaque is carved within a bold arched surround above a decorative Greek key border, giving it an architectural quality reminiscent of traditional English overdoor or hall decoration. The portrait possesses considerable character, with expressive facial modelling, crisply carved curls and confident treatment of the broad tricorn hat.

The reverse bears the carved initials 'LMD' together with the date '87', almost certainly identifying the maker and year of completion (1987). The work is fitted with its original recessed hanging plate and retains its original mellow honey-coloured finish.

The timber appears to be solid sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) rather than lime, supported by the grain, growth-ring definition and colour visible on the unfinished reverse. The carving has been executed from a single thick board approximately 55 mm deep, demonstrating both confidence and considerable skill.

Although the maker has not yet been positively identified, the plaque was discovered in the Stroud district of Gloucestershire, an area long associated with the Cotswold Arts & Crafts movement and exceptional woodworking traditions. The style strongly suggests the work of an accomplished independent craftsman or studio woodcarver rather than commercial production.

Unlike the mass-produced decorative carvings imported during the late twentieth century, this is an individually carved and signed work displaying careful hand-tooling throughout.

Condition

Very good original condition.

Minor surface marks and light wear consistent with age and use. No evidence of woodworm, structural repairs or significant damage. The original finish has acquired an attractive warm patina.
