Exceptional Large 19th Century Italian Renaissance Revival Painted Plaster Winged Dragon Sculpture

£3,950.00

An exceptionally rare and highly decorative late nineteenth-century Continental, probably Italian, painted plaster sculpture depicting a magnificent winged dragon in the Renaissance Revival taste. Executed with remarkable sculptural confidence, the creature displays a powerful leonine body, elongated serpentine neck, expressive open jaws and dramatically modelled wings, combining Renaissance grotesque ornament with the theatrical movement associated with the Italian Baroque tradition.

Measuring an impressive 74 cm in length, the sculpture possesses tremendous presence and was almost certainly intended as a statement decorative object or as part of an elaborate interior decorative scheme. The quality of the modelling suggests production by a skilled Italian workshop specialising in architectural ornament or decorative plaster casting during the final quarter of the nineteenth century.

Unlike the more commonly encountered Gothic Revival dragons derived directly from medieval gargoyles, this example belongs to the much scarcer tradition of Italian grotesque sculpture inspired by Renaissance fantastical beasts. Comparable works are rarely encountered on the open market.

The sculpture retains an attractive historic painted and bronzed surface together with an excellent state of preservation considering its age, exhibiting only minor historic repairs and age-related wear consistent with well over a century of display.

An outstanding statement piece equally suited to traditional interiors, libraries, country houses, collectors of Grand Tour and Renaissance Revival objects, or contemporary interiors seeking a dramatic sculptural focal point.
