Enormous pair of early 20th-century "Republican period" Foo Dogs
An enormous pair of early 20th-century "Republican period”, circa 1920–1935" polychrome ceramic Chinese export Foo dogs, modelled as the traditional male and female guardians representing the complementary principles of yin and yang.
The male is depicted with a carved sphere, often referred to as the “flower of life” ball, beneath his paw, while the female protects a small lion cub. Both figures are raised on traditional Chinese pedestal bases and decorated in rich antique green, golden ochre and burnt umber glazes.
These impressive figures previously “stood guard” at Wyld Court House, a beautiful 18th-century property in Hampstead Norreys.
Provenance
Formerly displayed at Wyld Court House, Hampstead Norreys.
Condition
Overall, the pair is in very good condition for its age. There are a few minor losses to the glaze and several small nibbles, all commensurate with age and use. The female Foo dog has lost the bell that once hung at the front of her chest; however, this is not immediately noticeable and does not detract from the overall appearance of the sculpture.
Dimensions: 54cm Deep, 45cm Wide, 101cm & 99cm High individually.
